Dear John, Nicholas Sparks

Dear John is a love story by Nicholas Sparks. The main character is John Tyree, a twenty-three year old male, who is in the special forces. When John comes home to Wilmington, North Carolina he unexpectedly falls in love with a beautiful young lady named Savannah. Unfortunately, at the end of the two weeks they are forced to part and John needs to return to the service and it is time for Savannah to attend college. John's father helped her choose her field of study; she noticed that he suffers a mental disability and wanted to be able to help people like him. John and Savannah promised each other that they would write as often as they can and never stop. They stay together for John's entire term and Savannah is very excited for them to start their lives together. Little does she know that John has reenlisted due to the attack of September 11. Savannah sends John one final letter, this is one that he is not excited to receive. She tells him plainly that she has found another man and is engaged. She gives no reason or explanation to who the man may be. When John returns home for his fathers funeral he finds out who Savannah is married to and finally gets an explanation to why. The man is a shock for John; he is an older man named Tim. He has always seemed as more of an older brother to Savannah then a possible romance. When John meets with Savannah she informs him that Tim has cancer and he needed someone to raise his son. Savannah says how she never wanted to leave John and it was the hardest thing she has ever done. John and Savannah both end up living fulfilling lives but whether it is together or not you will have to read to find out.

1) If you were Savannah would you leave John to help Tim?
2) Would you wait for a loved one who is in the military knowing that you may never see them again or try to find a more stable relationship?

1) If I were Savannah, I would nleave John. It's a tricky situation (to chose a friend over a lover) but her relationship with John, to me, was surreal.

2) It's different in the case of John and Savannah. They knew each other for like, two weeks. It's hard to qualify that as an actual relationship. However, if I was deeply in love with him, I'm sure I would wait a little while but still keep my options open without actually dating someone.

1) No I don't think she should leave John because she could have married John and still helped Tim out. I don't think she had to be married to him just to help him, he was not the riht one for her.

1. I agree with Sara. I think that it was still possible for Savannah to help Tim out without marrying him. She could have just helped in other was and took care of him, as a son.

2. I think that if I really new the person well or was in love with them I would wait, even if it is hard. I don't think that you can live thinking that they may never come back, but just have hope.

1. Ooh maaee, theht iz uh hard quehstyon. Actually, it isn't difficult at all. Of course you leave Tim because he's dying. I hear that when your in a relationship with someone who you know is going to die soon, it isn't that fulfilling. Plus, John probably has a rockin' bod now that he has been hardened by the U.S. military.

2. That's another thinker. I suppose I'd wait for my military guy. After all, what's so great about stability. I want to go to bed every night knowing that my lover could be dead! HOO HA!

2.) If I truly loved the person who is in the military, I think I would wait for him. Although I don't actually know what I would do, I think if it was true love I would wait.

1)If I were in her position I would stay with John. Tim as been a family friend and i'm sure it was possible to help his son without becoming his wife.

1. If I were Savannah I would never leave John to help Tim out. Savannah and John shared something special, where as Tim was just a friend.

1. Savannah probably could have helped Tim without marrying him. It's not fair that she had to make such a selfless decision when it wasn't even that necessary. Tim could have easily just left custody of his son to her.
2. If I was really in love with someone I would wait! But it seems like Savannah and John didn't even know each other all that well.

1. I'm not Savannah, but I don't think I would leave John. They really cared about one another and it would be hard to just break up their relationship.
2. Yes, I would wait. If you really love each other, you won't let time or place separate you.

1. If I were Savannah I would not have left John because she really loved John. There was no reason for her to leave John because she could have still helped Tim out if her and John were together.

2. I have never been in that situation so I do not really know what I would do. I would like to say that I would wait for him but that may be too hard.

1. I wouldnt be able to leave John even to help Tim. I would help Tim with everything i wife would do with his child and everything bbut not marry him or cheat on John.
2.I would definetly wait for him if i truly loved them.

1) I don't think it was a good idea to marry Tim, because she did not love him, and could have helped him in other ways. In a way, it was cruel to leave the person she really loved while he was away.
2) It depends how much I loved them and how long we had been in a relationship for. If I was truly in love with someone, then I would wait for them if we had a stable relationship. Otherwise I think it would be very difficult.
